No Pricetag on Passion

Posted on October 10th, by M-rk in Blog. No Comments

Amazing architecture and an even more amazing commitment to making something amazing. Proof that passion does not have a price tag. Unfortunately the property is not and never will be for sale, however I think it would take most of us 1000 lives to get near the asking price if it were to go on the market.

The surfing scene is definitely growing in New York City. The city that never sleeps is preparing to welcome new surf magazine that promises to be more than just another mag for dudes.

Wax is a bi-annual print publication exploring the intersection of art, culture and surfing in and around New York City. The project initiated out of a Kickstarter funding and is ready to upgrade the quality of the custom surf magazine. In “Wax”, style is almost everything.

For those looking to get involved, unfortunately it’s employees only this time around. However our calendar is packed throughout the summer with a tonne of other workshops that you can be part of. Make sure to watch this space.

Rise and Fall

Posted on May 18th, by M-rk in Blog. No Comments

With all of the hype focussing around Facebook’s stock market debut today, we couldn’t help but take another look at this really interesting infographic focussing on the life cycles of some of the web’s biggest online empires. With Facebook kicking the doors open in 2004, they have been up and running for over 8 years and seem to be going strong… Or not? If you follow trend, other internet success stories have tended to burn out after about 11 years of operation on average. I guess we’ll have to wait and see whether MZ and Facebook’s billion odd users (including us) have something to say about that in the future.

Just like in 2010 and 2011, Internet Week NY HQ will be home to stages, a classroom, lounges curated by Design Within Reach, installations from Ivan Toth Depeña in collaboration with Jared Schiffman’s “Spatial Media” class at NYU’s ITP, and more. With 20,000 more square feet of Digital Playground as well as Conference Theater—Internet Week HQ at 82 Mercer is poised to be the best yet.

On the ground floor, Internet Week NY will host large-scale ticketed conferences with partners like App Nation.

Surf in the City

Posted on May 14th, by M-rk in Blog. No Comments

In August of 2009, Saturdays opened its doors on a small, cobblestone street in Soho. Determined to suit a lifestyle occupied with surfing, living and working in New York City, Saturdays began selling boards and wetsuits while sourcing and selling books, fine art and other lifestyle accessories. Today, Saturdays creates, designs and produces its own line of menswear focusing on high-quality craftsmanship, authenticity and traditional style.

In addition to clothing, the up-front espresso bar serves their own blend of La Colombe coffee brewed by some of the best baristas in the city. Out back, the fully planted yard acts as a wood-decked sanctuary from the streets. It is a place to enjoy your coffee, hang out with friends or have a quiet meeting.

In the years since Saturdays opened, it has served as a hang out for some of New York’s most … Read More »

Posted on May 8th, by M-rk in Blog. No Comments

With summer just around the corner, we thought we’d drive your attention to this neat little project combining the creative talents of Kelli Anderson and solar home specialists Sungevity.

Everyone likes popsicles and saving the environment, right? Imagine if you could combine these two amazing things together and educate the public on the positives of switching to solar power in the process? Well mix creativity and a good cause together and you come up with a solar powered popsicle truck that gives away free popsicles and educates the public in the process.

Karton Furniture

Posted on May 1st, by M-rk in Blog. No Comments

To think that all of this time we’ve been throwing away empty boxes when we could’ve been using them… for our beds?
Innovative Australian company Karton has taken flat packed furniture to a new level, creating an entire range of affordable and recyclable cardboard furniture. Each piece uses a clever (and relationship-saving) system of folds and tabs makes assembly a cinch with no tools or glue required.
At $188 for a King sized bed, I’m sold. It’ll be interesting however to see what it comes delivered in?

Shelter Half

Part showroom, part salon, Shelter Half is a place for both shopping and lounging. This pop-up space in a temporary marketplace housed in a 4,200-square-foot space in the new La Brea design district in Los Angeles has a coffee corner and will host open-to-the-public events like movie and music nights, cooking showcases, roundtables and more.

NYC-based men’s retailer Save Khaki will create its area around SHELTER HALF’s namesake canvas, and iconic Santa Monica bookstore Arcana will showcase a special eye-on-America book collection. Environment Furniture’s home goods will be the beautifully comfortable backdrop of the showroom, including the brand’s signature sofas in reclaimed army tent.
